It can be seen from figure 1 that there is a sharp increase in profit from 30 million to 60 million in Hong Kong in 1997 while the profits in Singapore is stablised around 40 to 50 million. The reason for the soared profit in Hong Kong is the pre handover boom before 1997 as the same time the Singapore government implemented the low tax policy in early 1990s.
However, this was followed by a sudden decline and in 1999 profits fell to the lowest point of just 20 million in Hong Kong. it is apparent that there is a post handover depression. Profits then grew steadily towards 2001.It seems that the growth of China market have a positive effect on Hong Kong economy. In contrast, profits in Singapore declined steadily from 1996 to 2001. This was probably caused by the keen competition from Malaysia in mid and late 1990s.
. Working Conditions
As table 4 shown, both senior and junior staff are satisfied with lighting, thermal comfort, air quality, decoration and pantry.
Office Furniture
Under a half of junior staff are not satisfied with office funiture while three quarters of senior staff are satisfied with this aspect. The possible reason for this may be junior staff have to share common furnitures with lots of colleagues while senior staff have their own offices. The implication of this is that there is not enough office funrniture for junior which affects their working efficiency.
Equipment
Less than a third of junior staff are satisfied with equipment compared to senior staff. A possible explanation for the low satisfaction is senior staff have the high priority to use new equipment such as computers, scanner, printer, etc. while junior staff have to use old obsolete equipment. This can lead to low working efficiency of junior staff which affect the company profit.
